Since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, Afghan women have steadily lost their rights — to work, to education, to medical care. Girls were first barred from secondary schools, then from universities, and since 2024 they have been excluded even from medical training programs.
The country will soon face a shortage of nurses, midwives and lab technicians, in a place where most men will not allow a woman to be treated by a male doctor — particularly in gynecology and obstetrics. For Afghan women, adequate healthcare is becoming harder to reach with every passing year.
